omg hill-arious!

I know how most of y'all feel about Miz Clinton. But I don't think you have to be an ardent supporter, or even a tolerator, of hers to enjoy this. Moreover I feel that if this does not give you teh gleez, you are taking this shit far too seriously.

<lj-embed id="6" />

I think, in terms of lulz, it's giving that FMB song a run for its money.

Since, despite my genius friends sharing their wise and much appreciated opinions, I remain conflicted, we're going to hear Clinton speak tonight (Pier 30, 8pm) and Obama speak tomorrow (Key Arena, 11am).

It looks like I'll be here for Washington's caucus and in Texas by the time they have their primaries on March 4. I wonder if anyone would notice if I voted twice.. ? Just kidding, that would be immoral. And sort of pointless since I don't have strong feelings about the nomination...

Also, damn. For me, that's it in a nutshell:
"Perhaps the decision between these two candidates comes down to how you like to see your political candidate hedge. Do you like the candidate pre-hedged, like Clinton, or post-hedged, like Obama? The virtue of the first approach is that it leaves nothing to hide. The virtue of the second approach is that the candidate may think, if not speak."

more politics talk

Obviously I got all worked up about this watching the results last night. I still haven't decided whether I want to go to the caucus on Saturday and, if I go, who I want to vote for. Do you have an opinion on what I should do? Tell me all about it! It's good practice for Saturday.

The first problem is that I think caucuses are mostly dumb exercises. I have no interest in hearing my neighbors shout "Yes we can! Yes we can!" over and over in lieu of making real points about the strengths and weaknesses of the Democratic candidates. I think I have a pretty good idea who will win the delegates from my very liberal precinct in my fairly liberal city, and I don't think my vote is going to affect that. And I'm not sure I want to put up with the limp political arguments of a bunch of uninformed 18-year-olds and former Ron Paul supporters for the privilege of just being counted.

I'm a vote-your-conscience person, but I'm not sure I believe that matters in primaries. Especially this primary. Hell, no matter who the nominee is, the result will be ground-breaking if they're elected. I think they're pretty much balanced on the issues. They both have some good ideas (mostly the same good ideas), they've both done some shitty backhanded things in their political careers.

I was all in favor of Obama before for no real good reason other than his gift for oration. But the more I read, the more conflicted I get. I should stop anthropomorphizing the candidates, I guess, because I begin to feel they're getting treated unfairly and that I should vote for them on that basis, mainly Clinton.

Clinton is being treated appallingly. I read some article pointing out all the jokes made about her as a woman that, were they made about Obama as a black man, people would be livid about. And it was dead-fucking-on. It's sick that a double standard so blatant can exist. But what do we do about it, other than be pissed and boycott Urban Outfitters? (Oh you heard that right and if you think that's a small thing in my world I assure you it is not. This is how naive I am - I walked in there the other day, picked up one of the Clinton nutcrackers, and looked for the Obama version before it hit me that this was an attack on her for being a woman, for daring to intrude on male affairs, for pursuing power when she should be at home fixing Bill a steak. Anthropologie can get fucked by extension.) The problem is, I think Clinton is as guilty as the rest of us of taking feminism for granted since she's been a senator. She's not running as a feminist, she's running as a Clinton. She's not promising to end the disparities that make people think attacking a woman for being a woman and not minding her place is ok.

So I remind myself of all that and I realize that voting for her is not the blow for feminism I want it to be. She sat on the board of Wal-Mart, which famously prevents women from rising into management positions. There's a different set of standards for the rich and powerful, and electing Clinton will unfortunately not mean we can tell every little girl that she can be president some day. Then again, doesn't the same go for Obama and black kids?

So, ok, they're both symbols. Powerful symbols, as human as the rest of us underneath, as greedy, as capable of deception, but they're not monsters, they're not Republicans. Thus, again, does it really fucking matter which one is the nominee?

As much as I fucking loathe this line of reasoning, the only compelling difference I see between them is that Obama is more "electable". He's a good speaker, even if he's usually vague (Yes we can? Great! Um.. how?) and occasionally full of shit. People feel good listening to him and only grouchy skeptics like me look for reasons to mistrust him. He's done some unethical shit, but he hasn't been around long enough to have done too much of it, therefore I think the risk of independents and moderates finding out he's not their white knight after he's already got the nomination and voting for McCain is minimal.

And why am I limiting myself to those two knuckleheads? Why don't I caucus for Gravel or wait and vote for Nader or the Socialists or whoever the choices from the camps of idealism end up being? Cause one's a woman, and one's a racial minority, and one or the other is going to have the dollars and strength of the Democratic Party behind them. And Dean! I loved Dean. I wanted him to beat George Bush's monkeyeared ass. It's hard for me to consider giving my vote to a white male when there's the potential to finally bust that important though symbolic glass ceiling.

I guess I'm still in favor of Obama. I wouldn't mind a bit if Clinton was the nominee, but I think the one thing that can prevent this country getting exactly the president it deserves (which would be bad, cause we vote kind of emotionally and tend to take our freedom for granted) is a smooth talker. I believe Obama, with his hypnotic speech patterns and his palatable slogan, is that talker. Clinton's a genius, but she's more stoic. I don't think she can call as many voters away from the bombastic siren song of the conservative right.

Ok I'm done. If you're reading this, if you care about politics, and if you're willing to go into details about why you feel the way you feel, what are you doing Saturday? Or who did you/will you vote for in your state's primary?

ETA: This is what I've been reading that's lead to this paralysis..
The NYT article about Barack Obama killing his own nuclear safety bill on behalf of Exelon, a campaign contributor.. and then lying about it
Does Obama hate the gays? Sounds a little hearsay-ish, but if it's true, it's cowardly
So those are impacting my views on Obama's integrity. This is making me wonder if Clinton's being judged harshly just because a whole generation of us grew up with pretty much every adult we knew talking shit about her:
"Goodbye To All That"

There were these groups of people in elaborate Mardi Gras/masquerade getups wandering through these flat, dead, brown early spring fields. I wish I could have taken pictures.

from the putting my money where my mouth is dept.

For the Democratic presidential nomination, I support Senator Barack Obama. (Out of the Republican contenders, I like McCain, but it's doubtful I'd vote Republican.) My main reason for this is because he seems less slimey than Ms. Clinton or Mr. Edwards and because <strike>Mr. Richardson, while he seems like an awfully nice man, strikes me as ineffectual</strike>. [ETA: You know, that was a dumb thing to say. I don't mean ineffectual, I mean calm. Not bombastic. He'd actually probably be an amazing president, but I don't think this is a race that can be won by a humble candidate. Sorry I was a dick, Bill Richardson.] In short, Obama seems to me like a Leader.

Anyway, I was glad to hear he's come out against California's retarded mandatory health insurance legislation.
you kids get off my lawn: some items from recent ALA

Am I the only one who's kind of underwhelmed by this description of HTML 5? Header and footer elements? And y'all have had a decade to work on this? I hate to tell you, but I've been doing just fine making my own headers and footers out of DIVs. There's no problem with that method that I can see, and there are so many other things you folks could be working on! How about inline-block? Can we focus on inline-block? :|

This is good. Sound to me like the advice is to hide easter eggs for users to prevent them getting bored. That may not be the actual message. But I think it's a good idea..

I've been told not to use IE conditional comments. I would like to point out: come the fuck off it. Frequently it's the cleanest, most effective way to get shit done.

Back at Geocities I repeatedly explained to people why the fonts in their site designs weren't coming across on other computers. The situation that caused this confusion has not changed. Until it does change, is there really any point in talking about how great it's gonna be? And sry, my activism budget is going toward inline-block before web fonts.

Oh hello. I love you. I've done this before, but I had no idea there was a way to make it work in IE. (Plz refer to above about IE conditional comments.)

Also, if you hadn't heard, don't use Network Solutions to check domain name availability.
yes, they certainly are.

By 10am this morning I'd received three calls from Austin, TX. Tomorrow I have a phone interview with a company there. This is happening, and really quickly. It's no longer if I find a job or if I'll be able to afford to move. It's when.

It's going to be a sloppy move, for sure. Nothing is packed right now. Shit, the dishes aren't even done. What will probably happen is that I will find a job and go down there to live in a motel room, trying to find a place to rent. The housing situation in Austin is supposed to be similar to Seattle's, so this should be a quick process. When I find a place, it'll be a matter of signing a lease and writing a check immediately, from what I've been led to believe. When I've found a domicile, I'll send for the family, all pioneer-like. Except probably I will be flying back to help, cause I don't think I can convince Nait to do the entire move himself.

I didn't think anything would happen this quickly. We've been talking about making to-do lists of things we want to do before leaving Seattle. I guess if not now, when?

- Go to the ocean, preferably Oregon.
- Go to Aberdeen. Take pictures.
- Clean my old room at my dad's and take a lot of shit I've been storing there for a decade to Goodwill.
- Sell a lot of clothes, some furniture, and some electronics.
- Go to Vancouver, ideally on a boat or the train.
- Dancing. I haven't been to the Baltic Room in over two years.
- Drinking. I'd love to crawl whatever Capitol Hill bars are left, including Linda's, the Redwood, the Comet, maybe the new Cha Cha.
- Archie McPhee's, Pioneer Square, Cal Anderson, Bruce Lee's grave, The Ave, Twilight karaoke.
- <strike>Sorry Charlie's</strike>, <strike>Jade Pagoda</strike>, <strike>The Camlin</strike>.
- Chuckwagon, Larrabee Park, downtown Mount Vernon.
- Otto's, Meconi's, The Brotherhood.
- Smith Tower.
- Shit I would love to play street golf.

Adding to this as I think of shit.

I saw that in a community. It is my new favorite.
I feel fucking nasty. Our bathroom pipes are jammed, so that the bathtub won't drain and when the sink is filled, the tub backs up. If you're having trouble imagining that: it's gross. I haven't had a shower since Friday. Yesterday I had a quick sink-bath with hand soap.

Anyway the point is that my hair's really freaking long now (which I guess could have something to do with the stopped drain), too long to wash in the sink. So it's greasy and nasty and I cannot remember the last time I felt so disgusting and unclean. Current estimates have our plumbing being fixed in about 70 hours, since our landlord is legally supposed to take care of it in 58.

:P

I dyed my hair black a while ago. Some of you have seen it. I like the way it looks and stuff, but I have a problem. It's supposed to be semi-permanent, yet it's not really fading. In the meantime my roots are coming in, gving me that tacky bald-spot-in-the-middle-of-my-head effect since my hair is actually not black.

So what do you do with black grow-out? Can you dye over it? That seems unlikely.. Do you have to chop it off or resign yourself to having black hair until you're sick of the length?

What really sucks about this situation is that last time I was at Walgreen's they were closing out all sorts of hair dyes, so I have every color of the rainbow sitting in my cabinet waiting for me to try it. But I'm a little scared to. I don't want my hair to turn green.

Unrelated.. I posted something at oui oui, bebe! that I was originally going to put here. Stemming from a question about who people's personal icons are. It turned into style icons and this whole silly (but fun) thing with Polyvore. Anyway if you're bored you should try it and post the results, cause I'm dying to see what other people might come up with.

relocation assistance

Question for anyone working in the tech industry:

Is relocation assistance real? Are you more likely to get it moving to an area with lots of tech (Seattle), or an area where the tech industry is still coming into its own (Austin)? Do you only get it if the organization actively headhunts you? Is it only likely if you have a masters degree or are the new CEO or something?

Your thoughts, based on personal experience, anecdotal evidence, or pure supposition, would be very helpful to me in attempting to either 1) set or 2) ignore realistic expectations.

** I don't know.

This story about exactly what it's like to be a whore on Christmas may be the best thing I've ever read in The Stranger. It's not just the Grinch in me saying that - it's genuinely interesting and funny.

I think everyone on the planet has heard my Christmas at Chevron story, which plays out a lot like the whore on Christmas story, only with a lot less money changing hands. So I'll shut up. Come drink with us tomorrow! I'm bringing cookies*! :D

* My mom's supervising this. They should be edible.

Not too sure what the bulk of this means as I've - honest to god - never once played D&D. However, my husband tells me it entitles me to

throw a fireball!

Awesome.

I Am A: True Neutral Human Wizard (5th Level)

Ability Scores:
Strength-14
Dexterity-11
Constitution-12
Intelligence-15
Wisdom-14
Charisma-14

Alignment:
True Neutral A true neutral character does what seems to be a good idea. He doesn't feel strongly one way or the other when it comes to good vs. evil or law vs. chaos. Most true neutral characters exhibit a lack of conviction or bias rather than a commitment to neutrality. Such a character thinks of good as better than evil after all, he would rather have good neighbors and rulers than evil ones. Still, he's not personally committed to upholding good in any abstract or universal way. Some true neutral characters, on the other hand, commit themselves philosophically to neutrality. They see good, evil, law, and chaos as prejudices and dangerous extremes. They advocate the middle way of neutrality as the best, most balanced road in the long run. True neutral is the best alignment you can be because it means you act naturally, without prejudice or compulsion. However, true neutral can be a dangerous alignment because it represents apathy, indifference, and a lack of conviction.

Race:
Humans are the most adaptable of the common races. Short generations and a penchant for migration and conquest have made them physically diverse as well. Humans are often unorthodox in their dress, sporting unusual hairstyles, fanciful clothes, tattoos, and the like.

Class:
Wizards are arcane spellcasters who depend on intensive study to create their magic. To wizards, magic is not a talent but a difficult, rewarding art. When they are prepared for battle, wizards can use their spells to devastating effect. When caught by surprise, they are vulnerable. The wizard's strength is her spells, everything else is secondary. She learns new spells as she experiments and grows in experience, and she can also learn them from other wizards. In addition, over time a wizard learns to manipulate her spells so they go farther, work better, or are improved in some other way. A wizard can call a familiar- a small, magical, animal companion that serves her. With a high Intelligence, wizards are capable of casting very high levels of spells.

Find out What Kind of Dungeons and Dragons Character Would You Be?, courtesy of Easydamus (e-mail)

Detailed Results:

Alignment:
Lawful Good ----- XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (15)
Neutral Good ---- XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (21)
Chaotic Good ---- XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (20)
Lawful Neutral -- XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (15)
True Neutral ---- XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (21)
Chaotic Neutral - XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (20)
Lawful Evil ----- XXXXXXXXX (9)
Neutral Evil ---- XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (15)
Chaotic Evil ---- XXXXXXXXXXXXXX (14)

Law & Chaos:
Law ----- XXXX (4)
Neutral - XXXXXXXXXX (10)
Chaos --- XXXXXXXXX (9)

Good & Evil:
Good ---- XXXXXXXXXXX (11)
Neutral - XXXXXXXXXXX (11)
Evil ---- XXXXX (5)

Race:
Human ---- XXXXXXXXXXXXX (13)
Dwarf ---- XXXX (4)
Elf ------ XXXXXXXXXX (10)
Gnome ---- XXXXXX (6)
Halfling - XXXXXXXXXX (10)
Half-Elf - XXXXXXXXXXXX (12)
Half-Orc - XXXXXXXX (8)

Class:
Barbarian - (-6)
Bard ------ XX (2)
Cleric ---- (-4)
Druid ----- (-2)
Fighter --- (0)
Monk ------ (-17)
Paladin --- (-17)
Ranger ---- (0)
Rogue ----- (-4)
Sorcerer -- XX (2)
Wizard ---- XXXX (4)
my very interesting opinions on internet and television

Dear Amazon*:

* Corporation and policy-makers, not very nice employees I happen to know

I ordered a very goddamned expensive pasta maker from you a full goddamned week ago. Because this was a very expensive item offered through your own Seattle-based company instead of a drop shipper, you alerted me that I was qualified for free shipping. Of course I took advantage of this, because, as mentioned, I was ordering well in advance of the holiday for which I needed it. You estimate that my pasta maker will reach me on December 24th.

It may interest you to know that most services, including shipping, take a holiday on December 25th. It may further interest you to know that I live in an apartment managed by fucking morons who will not change the phone number the front door buzzer forwards to from my husband's to my own. And yet further to note that my husband will be at work answering phones on December 24th and may not be able to answer his personal cell phone should someone (say, United Parcel Service) want to get in the front door. Historically, when UPS can't get in the front door, they take our packages back to SoDo and make us come to retrieve them. (FedEx, on the other hand, leaves our packages in care of the GODDAMNED UPS STORE NOT THREE BLOCKS AWAY.)

I've ordered other items from other online retailers and recieved free shipping, so I sincerely hope it is not your feeling that your benevolence has entitled you to take forever and a fucking day shipping my package. I ordered some items two days ago, for instance. I paid for them using a discount code I found using Google. The shipping was still free, and the motherfucking package will be here Friday.

FRIDAY, ASSHOLES. FROM NEVADA. That's a THREE DAY turnaround.

It is with deep regret that I make the decision, as a long-time customer, to never order fuck-all from you ever again. Merry fucking Christmas.

Now I have finally seen Gossip Girl, which I've heard lots and lots about. Um. It's retarded.

I guess I misunderstood the reason people were so excited about it. When I think of people getting excited about TV, I think of Deadwood, a show well worth getting excited about. As I began to watch Gossip Girl, it was clear that this was no Deadwood, but hell, it's network TV. From the voice-over, I was hoping at least for Sex & the City. Nope.

I see now that the appeal of Gossip Girl is that same as The O.C. As far as I can tell, it's the same show. Rich, very good looking kids stir up drama within their own incestuous social circle. Which would be ok, I guess, but the drama is mostly dull (OMG it's a vague text message!!) and you have to wade through a lot of other plots involving their parents hooking up with one another. This was really confusing to me, cause I couldn't tell the parents and the kids apart. I hate to be That Guy, but seriously, all you white east coast preppies look the same to me. Moreover, every male in Gossip Girl looks exactly like the dark-haired dude from The O.C. Except for the bald ones and the gay ones.

What the fuck happened to episodic television? If your show's going to suck, at least don't make me follow the whole goddamned season to know what's going on. I am not drawn in, I am repulsed.

Project Runway, on the other hand, is episodic, moronic, and totally rules. I love watchin the designers make their clothes. I love that there's minimal scripted "drama" and people, for the most part, focus on their work. I love to hate Heidi Klum's stilted chiding and Michael "Stick Up My Ass" Kors. Near midnight, I was yelling very loud at the TV as the judges decreed that things that everyone knows are in style were not in style, and generally espoused a very narrow "always been at war with Eastasia" perspective on fashion.

Good times. Yay for stealing cable.
disgusting

Do you want to read a heart-warming xmas story about how Wal-Mart sued a permanently disabled former employee for the medical expenses they'd paid? It's really great. She gets enough money to pay for the round-the-clock care she requires, pays the legal fees she incurred getting it, and then Wal-mart takes the rest of what she was awarded by the court. The best part is that, if you're lucky enough to have health insurance, your insurance company probably has a provision allowing them to do the same.

It's ok, don't be mad. Insurance companies do this to keep costs down for everyone! It may seem like heartless opportunism, but it's not. If I'm understanding correctly, not paying legitimate medical claims that subscribers have been paying premiums for is part of the business model that allows them to make health insurance so affordable.

:D

So The Crocodile is closed for reals. Things I did at the Crocodile that I will probably not get to do again anywhere:

1. \m\, Saw Guitar Wolf ,/m/
2. Sang with Beth Ditto during a Gossip show when they do that wander through the crowd thing. I wonder if they still do that? I didn't know she had become a big celebrity until recently. I'm not trying to name-drop, but they were in Olympia when I was and I liked their shows back in the day, and the one I saw at the Crocodile was probably my favorite. That's all.
3. Saw my first show as a genuine Seattlite! (Awwwwww..)

<strike>I like this blog post/article about 10 Reasons you Should Never Get a Job. I admit I haven't read the whole thing yet, but I am pretty much sold after point 1, wherein it is better to get paid when you're not working than to only get paid when you are working (or sitting at a desk waiting to go home trying to look busy). Found once again via the always interesting galadarling.com.</strike>
Changed my mind. Too much bullshit about "oh you're dumb if you do this and you don't want to be dumb, do you??" to wade through. The points get buried..

I like this lady's bangs. I want bangs like that, but I want to do it myself. Like today, cause I'm sick and have vague plans that involve not leaving the house ever. Hmm..

I was watching Univision last night (cause what I like to do on Friday night is stay at home watching basic cable in a language I don't understand) and I saw what appeared to be the South Korean Senate get into a massive brawl! I couldn't tell for sure who they were cause of my poor Spanish skills, although the word "Iraq" came up in there so I suppose that's what they were fighting about. These dudes were throwing down, though. Every time the fight would seem on the verge of breaking up, somebody would jump up a couple of risers and launch himself at somebody else. There was a guy who looked like he might have been some sort of attendant or page reaching into the mass of dudes and poking them with a long stick.

Still no word from you-know-who about my employment prospects in this state.

One month smoke free! Whoop-whoop!

Check it out, best fashion photo ever taken! That girl is scratching her ass!

Oh hey, I have two questions for anybody who feels like sharing their opinion:

1. At what point did you break your parents of the expectation that you would spend every Christmas with them, and how did you do it?

2. You know me. Or at least sort of know me. If you were a career counselor, what career would you suggest I pursue?

longshot

Question. Does anyone know anything about the artwork that this photo is based on? I remember I had a magazine when I was a kid whose cover featured the same pose - both the chick and her tigers. I think it was Cricket. I've been Googling everything I can think of and I can't find the cover or the original, if the cover was in fact not the original, which I doubt cause why would an Italian coffee company base their photoshoots on the cover of a kids' magazine?

Driving me fucking nuts.

1. Yesterday, we received a Fun Tunnel. Everyone in the household is getting great enjoyment from it, however, it came without a packing slip and we don't know who to thank. Is it you?

2. Guess what I got myself for xmas?? :D

Excessive mooning.
xmas present idea

Thought I'd share. You can "adopt" an endangered species from the World Wildlife Federation on behalf of somebody on your list. If you donate $50 or more, they get a little stuffed version of the animal the donation is supporting. Good gift for people with too much shit, stubborn parents who won't tell you what they want, or young kids who are just gonna chew up whatever you get them anyway.

I love giving gift donations as presents. That way no one can bitch about what you got them, or they're not in the "holiday spirit". Mwahaha.
